Dead bodies of suspected Covid patients continue to be spotted floating on the Ganga River, triggering shock and anger among locals in parts of Bihar and neighbouring Uttar Pradesh with no one to hold accountability. The frightening visuals of corpses have also sparked huge health concerns in rural areas, as the country fights a pandemic that affects lakhs every day.
After more than 100 decomposing bodies washed up on the banks of the Ganga in Bihar s Buxar in the past two days, more have been found in Brahmapur in the same district. The administration, however, has brushed off responsibility, saying the bodies have been found in villages that are in UP.
All night the bodies were taken out and post mortems were carried out, officials said. (File)

As more bodies in the river surfaced on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, corpses were seen floating under a bridge near the border between the two states in an escalating human tragedy amid Covid. Officials in Bihar said the number of corpses that had washed up on the Ganga banks at Buxar on Monday was a staggering 71 and they blame Uttar Pradesh for them.
Visuals of bodies allegedly thrown over a bridge by ambulance drivers were widely shared on social media, where posts expressed shock at the insensitivity towards Covid victims and their families.

Unidentified bodies were found floating in river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district on Tuesday, a day after similar sightings in Bihar, reported NDTV. The district is only 55 km from Buxar, where bloated bodies had piled up on the banks of the river in Chausa village.
Ghazaipur District Magistrate MP Singh said that officials were at the spot where the bodies have been found and an investigation was underway, reported ANI. “We are trying to find out where they came from,” he said.
Local residents, however, have accused the administration of incompetence and complained of foul smell emanating from the decomposed bodies. “We informed the administration about the matter, but no action has been taken by them,” Akhand, a local resident, told ANI. “If the situation continues like this, there is fear of us getting infected by [the] coronavirus.”
