Last week I wrote about my friend, Bishop Rance Allen, in conjunction with Black History Month. This week I continue that focus, only this time with a bit of a different twist.
I’ve shared in past columns how my elderly mother wept remembering how she refused to hold hands with a little Black girl during school recess. And how my father had nothing against Black people; he just believed they should stay with ‘their kind.’
I was confused about racism until Monroe High School where I became close friends with many African-Americans while playing sports. I remember wondering, What’s the big deal?

I had heard about him early on, especially in my musical career as he was one of the best ever to come from our quaint little town. He and his brothers had already become local legends simply by the music they made from their front porch.

What’s left to say about 2020 except that it’s over. But what a year with the well-chronicled coronavirus pandemic that killed more than 300,000; racial unrest that created division in across many communities and a presidential election that was over until it wasn’t. And there was plenty of more to a year that goes down as one of the most memorable in recent history. Here’s some of what happened.
