Olympic Games Stewart McSweyn breaks his own 1500m record

Middle-distance king Stewart McSweyn has further cemented his Olympic medal credentials by smashing his own Australian 1500m record at the Diamond League meet in Monaco. In a red-hot race where 10 of the top 12 finishers set personal bests, McSweyn was fourth in three minutes 29.51 seconds, taking a full second off the previous mark he set last year in Doha. The 26-year-old Tasmanian also qualified for the 5000m and the 10,000m at the Tokyo Olympics, but has chosen to focus solely on the 1500m where he believes he has the best chance of achieving a podium finish. In fact, the men’s 400m should come with a spoiler alert because world record-holder Wayde van Niekerk and US champion Michael Norman have decided that the Hungarian city, and not Tokyo, should be the site of their first ever head-to-head. It will also be the first time that Norman takes on world 400m champion Steven Gardiner of The Bahamas, setting up an intriguing three-way battle over one lap of the track.
