Heritage grants awards announced for five Laois projects

€23,500 grant for work on Kildare pyramid tombs, vault and walled towns

);   ); County Kildare has received €23,000 for three projects under special grant schemes run by The Heritage Council. Under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme, €18,500 has been allocated to community groups and not-for-profit organisations in Kildare. Follies Trust received €8,500 for the conservation of iron doors on two pyramid mausolea at Maudlins burial ground, Naas. Tea Lane Graveyard Committee was awarded €10,000 to carry out conservation works to the Grattan Family Vault Celbridge. Meanwhile, under the Heritage Council’s Irish Walled Towns Network (IWTN), €5,000 is earmarked for interpretation initiatives, which will protect and preserve the history and heritage of Ireland’s walled towns. Kildare Town Heritage CLG has been allocated €3,500 for its project Interpretation for the three abbeys of Kildare.’ The aim of this project is to raise public awareness of the three great abbeys of Kildare. Can I travel outside my county this weekend? Travel within counties has been allowed since April 12th, as has travelling as far as 20km from your home. So, for example, if you live in Shankill, Co Dublin, you can travel to Greystones, Co Wicklow, which is 15km by road. Or, if you live in Kinvara, Co Galway, you can travel to the Flaggy Shore at Newquay, in Co Clare, which is 11km by road. Many people have been taking a more flexible approach to the 20km rule, but the wider ban on intercounty travel (which many rural TDs have said is unworkable) will be lifted on May 10th.

Image: Heritage Ireland via Twitter GRAFFITI HAS BEEN SCRATCHED on passage tombs at a Neolithic burial monument in Meath in the “latest in a series of acts of vandalism” at the site.  The Office of Public Works (OPW) and the National Monuments Service (NMS) said they are “deeply dismayed” by the vandalism at Loughcrew in Oldcastle.
