The federal government hopes to send out the $1,400 checks contained in the $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill by the end of March, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday.
Psaki offered the timetable at her daily coronavirus briefing as the U.S. House prepared to take up the legislation as early as Tuesday.
“Our focus right now is on getting this bill across the finish line, getting relief out to the American people, which we expect will happen by the end of the month,” Psaki said.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, part of a group of Senate Republicans who met with President Joe Biden and asked him to shrink his $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill, said Tuesday that families making $200,000 shouldn’t get checks in this next round of payments.
Collins said she supported keeping the payments at $1,400 for eligible individuals, $2,800 for couples and $1,400 for dependents, but wanted them to end more quickly than under the legislation moving through the House this week.
The House legislation gradually phases out the payments for individuals earning from $75,000 to $100,000, and for couples earning from $150,000 to $200,000. The caps were added in response to complaints from lawmakers that the proposed formula would have allowed large families earning $300,000 or $400,000 to get some federal largesse.

The head of the House Democrats’ progressive wing defended the $1,400 checks in President Joe Biden’s coronavirus stimulus bill on Sunday, while a GOP governor called for scaling back the package and the No. 2 House Republican dismissed polls showing strong support for the $1.9 trillion measure.
The comments came as the House prepared to vote this week on the stimulus bill under a process known as reconciliation that will prevent a Senate filibuster and allow the Democrats to pass the legislation by majority vote without any Republican support.
