Trust raising money for 23-acre land purchase
ORLEANS The Orleans Conservation Trust last week announced its goal of raising $900,000 for the purchase and habitat restoration of 3.74 acres of land at 4 Braddock’s Way.
The property will complete the creation of the 23-acre Henson’s Cove Conservation Area, the trust said in a statement March 5.
The trust said it intends to preserve the land in perpetuity and restore much of the waterfront to grassland habitat.
The conservation area already offers prime habitat for a variety of wildlife, including northern diamondback terrapins, Eastern box turtles and American black ducks.
Restoration work has helped the threatened diamondback terrapin. The number of protected nests increased and the number of surviving hatchlings rose from 13 in 2012 to 162 in 2020.

Cape Cod’s annual cold-stunned sea turtle phenomenon and the coordinated network of people and organizations that responds are featured in a new television nature series for BBC and Discovery premiering in the U.S. and around the world this month.
A Perfect Planet, an exquisitely filmed five-part series hosted by Sir David Attenborough, demonstrates that while the interaction of Earth’s natural forces sunlight, volcanoes, oceans supports an abundance of life, human activity threatens to upend that delicate balance. The sea turtle rescue program is featured in the final episode of the series, “Humans,” which also examines efforts being made to address climate change and other human-induced environmental threats.
At Cape Wildlife Center: Cold-stunned sea turtles
Caryn Ritchie
October through December is the time of year when sea turtles experience cold stunning. For the past 30 years, the numbers have been on the rise. Climate change appears to be a major factor in this increase. The waters are staying warmer longer, and getting warmer farther up the coast towards Maine.
The Kemp’s Ridley migration has extended into the Gulf of Maine. As long as the water is warm, the turtles stay longer, and when the temperatures drop they travel south, but because of their location, they can end up in Cape Cod Bay. The decrease in temperature along with strong winds cause them to stun and they are unable to swim. They get trapped in the hook shape on the bay and can’t escape. When they wash up on shore, they are hypothermic, and can appear dead.
