Arizona s Grand Canyon Council of the Boy Scouts of America plans to sell its primary summer camp near Payson and 10 acres of land at a south Phoenix camp to help settle legal claims involving sexual abuse of young people.
The decision comes more than a year after the Boy Scouts national organization was hit with thousands of sexual abuse lawsuits and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. On July 1, Boy Scouts of America proposed an $850 million settlement with tens of thousands of those complainants, marking the highest payout in a child sexual abuse case in U.S. history.
As part of the agreement, Arizona’s Grand Canyon Council is required to contribute $7 million to the settlement trust. The council oversees nearly 1,690 groups of Scouts across the state serving nearly 37,000 youth, according to their website.
