Nicole Clayton recently opened the doors at The Loft at Steamer Co. 5, an events venue inside the historic firehouse at 200 W. Marshall St. The 3,000-square-foot space, which opened in mid-February, is the upstairs neighbor of Gallery5, an art gallery that’s been in the building since 2005.

That’s what the Seattle coffee giant has ordered for one of its latest Richmond-area locations, a takeout-only store in the Fan near VCU’s campus. Starbucks plans to open the new-to-market concept at 1115 W. Main St. in an existing commercial building next door to a 7-Eleven. The property is owned by Mark Wilson, who said he believed the location would be Starbucks’ first such outpost in Virginia. “It’s a new concept for Starbucks and this will be the first one in Virginia to have this concept,” property owner said on Thursday. Wilson declined to comment further.

The local housing nonprofit bought the now-razed motel’s site at 13916 and 13920 Jefferson Davis Highway for $1.2 million earlier this month, according to the county’s online property records. Better Housing, which focuses on income-based housing, plans to build a 166-unit, income-based project called the Colbrook Community, with a mix of primarily garden-style apartments and 16 townhomes. Units would come in one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations, said John Bolton, the nonprofit’s vice president of real estate development.
