Louisville sophomore guard Josh Nickelberry has announced that he plans to transfer elsewhere to continue his college basketball career.
“Thank you to Coach Mack, my teammates and all of Card Nation of these past two years,” Nickelberry said in a statement. Louisville will always have a special place in my heart and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for me.”
The first recruit to ever commit to Mack at Louisville, Nickelberry’s U of L career was plagued by injuries and illness over the last two years. He made a three-pointer in seven of his nine appearances this past season, but averaged just 2.8 points per game.

LSU target Jacoby Mathews receives elite 5-star status LSU is in the mix for the Ponchatoula star Jacoby Mathews. By Garland Gillen | March 9, 2021 at 9:39 AM CST - Updated March 9 at 8:48 PM
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - It was quite obvious on Friday nights this past fall that Jacoby Mathews is a dynamic talent. Now the country no doubt knows. Rivals recruiting service elevated Mathews to elite five-star status. The Ponchatoula junior is also ranked No. 11 overall in the 2022 class.
“I was super excited. It’s kind of weird. One day you know you’re a 5-star, and it’s kind of exciting. The next day you’re a regular, human being. I know I’m at the top right now, but there’s someone fighting for that spot, so I can’t stop,” said Jacoby Mathews.
“Through his immediate apology, ownership of his actions, difficult dialogue with his team and more, Coach McDermott has demonstrated a commitment to grow,” Rasmussen continued. “I believe his apology, his commitment to grow from this, to learn, and to regain the trust of his student-athletes and others impacted by his words.”
Last week, McDermott described the speech he gave his players.
“Specifically, I said: ‘Guys, we got to stick together. We need both feet in. I need everybody to stay on the plantation. I can’t have anybody leave the plantation,’” McDermott said Tuesday.
He coached Wednesday before the school suspended him for one game on Thursday. Before Wednesday’s game, McDermott said on the Bluejays’ pregame show that he offered to resign for the comments. He said his players didn’t want that.
