About 10:05am yesterday (Tuesday 29 December 2020), police sighted a vehicle travelling west along the Bruxner Highway, Ballina. Officers conducted a u-turn with the intention of stopping the vehicle for a random breath test. The vehicle has then accelerated away and drove off the highway at the first available exit. Police were able to stop the vehicle where the male driver was spoken to. Inquiries revealed that he did not hold a driver’s licence. It was also established that the man had only recently faced court for the same offence.

Shortly before 11pm yesterday (Friday 25 December 2020), officers from Bankstown Police Area Command were called to Truscott Street and found a Lexus had hit two parked cars. The driver, a 55-year-old man was subjected to a roadside breath test returning a positive result and became aggressive, assaulting officers when they attempted to arrest him. The man was taken to Bankstown Police Station where he allegedly returned a breath analysis reading of 0.179.

Double-demerit points remain in place until midnight on January 3rd. Police are targeting drivers who are speeding, not wearing seatbelts, using mobile phones and failing to wear a helmet on a motorbike. The four D’s are also being targeted: drinking, drug-use, dangerous and distracted driving. Karen Webb, Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, says the warning to drive safely is even more important since one person lost their life on New South Wales roads since the operation commenced. So far, there have been 57 major crashes and 833 speed infringements issued. “We hope to see drivers taking care while visiting loved ones during the festive season, as police continue to patrol all roads throughout the operation” Ms Webb says.
