Narowal Expressway: Two secretaries among seven officials issued contempt notices

Top Story June 1, 2021 LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday issued contempt notices to the provincial secretary Planning & Development, secretary Communication & Works and five other officials for misleading the court in a matter relating to delay in construction of Narowal Expressway. Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan was hearing a petition filed by Shakargarh Bar Association. Minority MPA of PML-N Ramish Singh Aurora also became party in the case by filing a civil miscellaneous application. Advocate Safdar Shaheen Pirzada, on behalf of the petitioners, argued before the court that the government had been deliberately delaying the construction of the expressway despite the fact that a revised PC-I had been approved in April 2018.

National May 26, 2021 LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday declared the federal government’s policy of holding auction of toshakhana articles for a selected category of people as illegal. Allowing a petition against the government’s decision to sell toshakhana articles through auction to officers of the federal government and armed forces only, Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan directed the government to introduce a legislation to make the auction transparent and fair. Advocate Adnan Paracha had filed the petition, saying the policy to allow the officers of the federal government and armed forces to only participate in the auction was sheer discriminatory and unlawful. May 25, 2021 LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) declared on Tuesday secret auctions of precious state gifts kept in Toshakhana unconstitutional. A bench of the LHC comprising Chief Justice Qasim Khan ruled that the policy of secret auctions of gifts given to government officials by heads of other countries and foreign dignitaries is unconstitutional. The court was hearing a petition filed by Advocate Adnan Paracha against secret auctions of Toshakhana items. The top LHC judge directed the government to legislate on the matter. During the hearing, a government counsel said that dignitaries of two countries exchange gifts, to which Justice Khan replied that states exchange gifts and not personalities. “Can they get state gifts if they are not holding any public office?” he asked.
