Creative Arts Fellows

Creative Arts Fellows Creative Arts Fellowships, supported by the Friends of the Library and the Ray Mathew and Eva Kollsman Trust, offer Australian artists and writers an opportunity to develop new work that is inspired or informed by our collections. 2021 Frederick Septimus Kelly: the Lost Olympian Image David will examine the manuscripts of Frederick Septimus Kelly (1881-1916), a prolific and prodigiously talented musician and composer. David seeks to restore the parts of Kelly’s body of work that have been forgotten since his death by typesetting and editing them, and preparing them for publication in five new volumes. At the conclusion of the project, songs, solo piano works and the first Violin Sonata will be performed in Canberra for the first time since Kelly’s death. A lecture-recital will also be given, comparing Kelly s work with that of Australian contemporaries and that of Ralph Vaughan Williams up to the age that Kelly achieved when he was killed on the Somme.

Darkened Rooms: Death, Spiritualism and the Great War

Over 400,000 men enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces to fight in World War I. Nearly one in every five of them was never to return. As every strata of society searched for meaning amidst such cataclysmic loss, many turned to Spiritualism a fringe religion built on the belief that “death is not a cessation of life but a mere change in condition” and that those who had passed on could communicate with the living.       Why did so many rational men and women place their faith in Spiritualism? How did spirit mediums convince them that communication with the dead was possible? And what was the impact of Spiritualism on the Australian experience of the Great War? Join author Nadia Bailey as she draws from her research in the Library s collections for her historical novel in progress.

Passengers Attempt To Skip Hawaii Quarantine With Worker Bribe Advertisement: Two passengers arriving in Hawaii tried to bribe their way out of the state’s mandatory 10-day quarantine. The two travelers offered an airport screener a total of $3,000 to let them leave without going into quarantine. They were promptly arrested and flown back to the mainland after the screener informed authorities. Hawaii’s Safe Travels program requires travelers to quarantine for 10 days without a negative COVID test.
