Kunming has seen a big surge in homegrown craft beer brands and bars in recent years. The international trend is now so well established in the spring city that just a few years ago we introduced the Best Brewery category to the Best of Kunming Awards. After the introduction multiple new venues have opened, with some brewing beers that include local, yet exotic, flavors such as mushrooms, fresh chili peppers and Sichuan pepper corns.
Starting today, many of these local brewers, as well as well established brands from Beijing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guiyang and other cities across China come together in the Spring City for Kunming Calling . The 3-day event is organized by Modern Sky Lab and co-organized by Yun Brewing Pub. It kicks off July 9 at Nanya B1 NEW Mall, just across the street from Nanya Fengqing Mall.

That s, we love a cold can of Chinese craft beer.
So obviously, we were excited to learn that the brewmasters at Great Leap Brewing had concocted some fresh flavors for the summertime. With the mercury rising quickly throughout China, no time is too early for a crisp and refreshing pale ale.
With fruit infusions often falling flat on the flavor front, we were relieved to realize that the ‘notes of tropical fruit’ were harmoniously calm in this new beer.

The American and European dry-hopping is robust and yet balanced. This beer excites the palate with flavorful hops without leaving an acrid desolation in the drinker’s mouth.

New drinks menu at Forno
Bottega s sister restaurant Forno kicks us off this week with their overhauled drinks menu. From new wines to craft beer options, spritzes to handcrafted gin and tonics and cocktails, all bases are covered. Highlights in the latter category include their amaro sour (Amaro Averna, blueberry puree, lemon juice, rosemary syrup, egg whites, and fresh rosemary; pictured above left) and Garibaldi (fresh orange juice, Campari, and a wedge of fresh orange; above right). New drinks menu at El Barrio
El Barrio has revamped their drinks menu just in time for CNY, adding a new range of margaritas, including coconut, papaya, mango, blueberry, and most excitingly, strawberry jalapeño. They also have a new happy hour available Sunday to Thursday from 9-11pm for buy one, get one free on draft beer (Carlsberg and Jing-A Worker s Pale Ale), margaritas, and cocktails: think BOGOF on sangria, paloma, and mojito as well as negroni, whisky sour, or gin and tonic.
