Tennessee lawmakers elect leadership, call for unity as session opens

Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, R-Franklin, nominated McNally to the position. He s truly a man of the highest integrity with a lifetime record which backs it up, Johnson said in nominating McNally for another term. He s been a pillar of strength for this body and for the people of Tennessee. All five Democratic senators on the floor abstained from the vote. Sen. Raumesh Akbari, D-Memphis, was absent. McNally pledged to lead the Senate “on an impartial basis” after his reelection Tuesday. Echoing Sexton s call for unity, McNally said the state went through hardships such as the March tornadoes and floods over the past year, and challenges will likely remain.
