Francois Dominguez has spent nearly a decade in Windsor living out his dream of running a restaurant serving the food his grandmother raised him on as child in Mexico.
But by December, after surviving through the early stages of the pandemic, he realized his dreams were crumbling around him. I was about to close my doors. I had no income, nothing. I couldn t afford to stay open, he remembers.
Some of Windsor-Essex s hot spot zones identified by the provincial government also have low vaccination rates.

Downtown Windsor has the highest rate of COVID-19 in the city, yet it s also one of the least vaccinated areas.
And it s not the only city hot spot identified by the province with that same trend: high COVID-19 rates, lower socio-economic status and low vaccination rates.
Windsor s city centre, with postal code N9A, is one of seven other postal code areas the province pinpointed in Windsor-Essex as being the hardest hit by COVID-19. Those hot spots are now being prioritized by the province for vaccinations for people aged 50 and older as the government works to get ahead of the third wave.

Echoing guidance for last year’s pandemic Easter celebrations, the medical officer of health for Windsor and Essex County on Thursday urged families to connect virtually and spend time outside during the long weekend.
“We recognize it is an important time of year and people will be looking for some activities,” said Dr. Wajid Ahmed. “Choose those activities outdoors. The weather will be better. It will be a good opportunity and you are reducing the risk.”
