Council Honors Rice For 46 Years Of Service
Sedalia City Council met Tuesday night after observing MLK Day on Monday, during which all City offices were closed.
The first item on the agenda was to honor the service of John Rice, who retired after working for the City of Sedalia for 46 years and two weeks, first as a Sedalia Police Officer, then serving in the IT Department starting in 2011.
Jeffrey McKinney retired after serving 10 years, 9 ½ months in the Street Department. He was not present Tuesday night.
A presentation from City Finance Director Dawn Jennings noted that the City is on track with collections, with use taxes up significantly by 6.5 percent. Franchise tax collections are up 12 percent, while transportation tax collections are down. However, property tax is up 17 percent over 2019, Jennings said.

Missouri Health & Wellness (MH&W), a medical cannabis company licensed to operate five dispensaries in the state, announced today that its Sedalia location will be open for business on December 21. The Sedalia location is one of five dispensaries operated by MH&W and was one of the first approved by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) to operate in the state. MH&W also owns and operates dispensaries in Belton, Kirksville, Jefferson City and Washington.
“This has been a long time coming and we are excited to finally bring medical cannabis to Sedalia, Pettis County, and the surrounding areas,” said Randy Stambaugh, MH&W’s statewide manager. “I can’t say enough about the support we have received from the City of Sedalia, the business community and the residents.”
State Fair Community College broke ground on Monday afternoon for a $6.9 million Olen Howard Workforce Innovation Center in Sedalia.
The SFCC Board of Trustees approved a $6.9 million contract with Prost Builders, Inc., for construction of the Innovation Center during a special meeting Dec. 8.
The construction will take place on the site where the original “Plywood U” buildings from the late 60s and early 70s were located.
On stage were Darlene Bradbury & her sister Shirley Rowden (Olen Howard s daughters), Board of Trustees President Randy Eaton, Dr. Joanna Anderson, SFCC president, Sedalia Mayor John Kehde, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, SFCC Foundation President Joe Fischer, SFCC Manufacturing Partners Paul Dick & Kevin Vandeven.
She was presented with a certificate of appreciation from Sedalia Mayor John Kehde.
The other award recipients were not present Monday night, including David Gerken, collection system foreman for the WPC Department, for 15 years of service, and Courtney Blaszczk, pre-treatment storm water coordinator for the WPC Department, for five years of service.
The meeting then continued with a budget amendment pertaining to the cost share for Missouri Main Street Connection, Inc., for a “People Energizing Places” grant program.
The City is partnering with MMSC and agreed to a 75-25 split of expenses of the PEP grant, with Sedalia paying 25 percent, or $9,600, for a downtown revitalization effort.
