Four of the world’s biggest tech platforms have developed a set of commitments that aims to protect women from violence and abuse on their respective platforms. The tech companies also reached out to women who have experienced abuse to take part in developing the policies.

As the web turns 32 this Friday, its creator Tim Berners-Lee has used his annual letter to draw attention to the way the digital divide affects young people around the world.
While we might assume young people now grow up as digital natives, Berners-Lee pointed to a 2020 report from the International Telecommunication Union, which points out that one third of young people around the world don t have access to the internet. Even when young people are able to get online, they are sometimes be forced off of platforms based on their negative experiences especially girls and those who belong to minority groups. The consequences of this affect everyone, said Berners-Lee.

Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee has co-authored an open letter with Rosemary Leith, calling for internet connectivity for all young people around the world.
According to Berners-Lee and Leith, who co-founded the World Wide Web Foundation to advance the open web as a public good and a basic right, funding for network infrastructure, subsidies and support for community networks makes it entirely possible to provide internet access to all young people.
