Five Things for Dedham, Norwood and Westwood, week of May 27-June 3

Dedham Town Meeting: Yes to Manor, no to Board of Health revision

Dedham Town Meeting: Yes to Manor, no to Board of Health revision Mary Ellen Gambon, Correspondent DEDHAM The mood of Monday evening’s Dedham Town Meeting felt almost like a family reunion, as dozens of the 224 residents finally were able to exchange handshakes and hugs under a balmy sky after 15 months of enduring the COVID-19 pandemic. This spirit carried over into the policymaking decisions, as 17 of the 18 articles moved swiftly through passage with little to no discussion during the three-hour meeting, held at the Dedham High School football field. “When we are elected to take on the responsibility, we are entitled to advocate our position strongly and vibrantly,” said Town Moderator Dan Driscoll. “But at the end of the day, we’re here to solve problems. And that means coming to an agreement, trying as best we can to resolve differences.”

Dedham Town Hall prepares to reopen to the public

Dedham Town Hall prepares to reopen to the public The bad news – parking’s tight, and it’s about to get tighter. Nearly a year after town employees moved into the former Ames School on Washington Street, Town Manager Leon Goodwin announced that the building will be open to the public on May 24, to coincide with the summer schedule. Currently, the public is allowed into Town Hall by appointment only. During his announcement to members of the Select Board on April 29, Goodwin said there will be open houses on May 15 and 22; the May 15 open house will be for the Senior Center, while the May 22 open house will be for the entire building.

Veterans Spotlight — US Army Lt Col Dorothy Courtemanche

Dorothy (Dot) Courtemanche served her country in the US Army as a nurse. She retired as a lieutenant colonel after a 23-year career with assignments at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Cutler Army Hospital in Ayer, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, DC, and Fort Meade in Maryland. Born in Dedham, she graduated from Dedham High School and later from the Catherine LaBouré School of Nursing in Boston. She trained at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, where all orthopedic Vietnam War combat injuries were received. Lt. Colonel Courtemanche’s first assignment was in Seoul, South Korea, at the 121st Evacuation Hospital. “It was unbearably hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Many of us wrote home to ask our families to send electric blankets…got monsoons that were brutal…the whole base was flooded…there were six nurses to a hooch (a cinder block building),” she recalled.
