Missing El Paso priest found safe

CNA Staff, Apr 12, 2021 / 11:11 am America/Denver (CNA). A Catholic priest of the diocese of El Paso who went missing last week has been found safe. The diocese reported Father Antonio Martinez Ceballos, assistant pastor of Corpus Christi Parish in El Paso’s Lower Valley, missing to the police on April 8. Martinez, who is originally from Colombia, was last seen the evening of April 6 at his parish. Early April 9, the diocese reported that thanks to efforts by the police and the community, Father Martinez had been found safe. The diocese told local news that they would provide no further comment about his disappearance or the circumstances surrounding how he was found.

Msgr John Tracy Ellis on selecting bishops in the US

Msgr. John Tracy Ellis, 1905-1992, was a professor of church history and theology who taught at the Catholic University of America from 1938 to 1964 and from 1977 to 1989. From 1964 to 1977 he taught at the University of San Francisco. Earlier he was at St. Viatour College in Bourbonnais, Illinois, and the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. (Courtesy of Catholic University of America, University Libraries, Special Collections) Few things are as satisfying in the life of a Catholic journalist as to be on the receiving end of the kindness of scholars and clergy who help us in the media get to the bottom of something. There is, if you will, a fraternity of people who work with words the way others work with their hands. This fraternity is especially strong when the people involved are grouped around a shared love of someone or something. On top of all that, it allows me to say, with Blanche DuBois, that I ve always relied on the kindness of strangers!

Civil Lawsuits Are the Only Way To Hold Bishops Accountable for Abuse Cover-UPS

Civil Lawsuits Are the Only Way To Hold Bishops Accountable for Abuse Cover-UPS Victims or their family members react to a Pennsylvania grand jury investigation that identified more than 1,000 child victims of clergy sexual abuse These revelations are shocking but not surprising given the history of the church’s sexual abuse scandal. Since 1984, similar disclosures from around the country have made national headlines and brought shame to the church. Yet the few criminal prosecutions of church officials for such cover-ups have either been dropped or resulted in small fines or, in one case, probation. Civil lawsuits – legal claims brought by abuse victims for money damages – have consistently been the only effective way to make Catholic church officials publicly and concretely accountable for their decadeslong cover-up of unspeakable crimes. I argued this in my 2008 book, “Holding Bishops Accountable.” It is still true today.
