The First Ladies of the Hillside are forging a new path for themselves. Their friendships formed and grew on Zoom during the pandemic. And now, they are looking beyond their group, and how to help all families in the Hillside.
They are also helping UMD students understand more about the ways of the world. Grace McLarnan is one of those students. She is now a fixture in the First Ladies. She met them through a brain development class lead by Molly Harney. They ve had their struggles, of course. But they embody a saying a teacher in high school told me. Lift as you rise. They are growing personally, and they are trying to give other people a hand up as well, Grace told us. They are so positive, trying to make things better for their kids.

DULUTH, Minn.– History was made in the Northland as the first Black judge for Minnesota’s Sixth Judicial District was sworn in Friday afternoon.
The Sixth Judicial District includes Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis counties. Now Judge Shawn Pearson fills the bench as the first person of color assuming the role and replacing Judge Shaun Floerke, who filled the seat for 30 years.
Pearson took his oath at the St. Louis County Court House in Duluth Friday afternoon. Some of his previous work includes representing parents in child protections matters and volunteering as an attorney for the children’s law center in Minnesota. He also sits on the board of the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial.
HIBBING â An Iron Range public defender has been named to replace longtime Judge Mark M. Starr in the St. Louis County Courthouse in Hibbing.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan on Thursday announced that Bhupesh Pattni, of Virginia, will move into the top seat in the courtroom. Starr retired from his seat earlier this year after serving more than 13 years.
In the news release, Walz described feeling âhonoredâ to appoint the lawyer to judgeship. âMr. Pattni has a wealth of experience, a sense of duty, and a deep commitment to his community,â he said. âHis skills and wisdom will serve him well in his judicial career.â
