I have decided to join the ranks of Australia Day award recipients who are handing back their awards in response to the âupgradingâ of Margaret Courtâs Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) to the highest award of Companion (AC).
As an avid sports fan, I celebrated the awarding of an AO to Mrs Court, a suitable recognition of her outstanding sporting achievements.

I question, however, why it was deemed appropriate by the committee to upgrade her award. Her public comments in relation to LGBTI people â I wonât repeat them here â are damaging to significant parts of our community, and by no means represent the views of many Christians.
Church leader Reverend Alistair Macrae has hit out at Margaret Court for her controversial views on homosexuality as the fallout continues from the tennis champion s Australia Day honour. Court, who holds the record for most grand slam singles titles with 24, was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia - the nation s highest civilian honour - in a decision that has sparked furious backlash. Reverend Macrae, a former president of the Uniting Church in Australia, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017 for his services to the community but joined the growing list of recipients who declared they would be handing back their awards in protest.
