Marcus Palmer, 41, who was stopped in July last year two months after the death of George Floyd while in police custody in the US, claimed the officers were motivated by his skin colour. But that allegation was rejected by Recorder James Bromige at Swindon Crown Court this week, who said the officers were not influenced by race. Fining him £150 and imposing a three month prison sentence suspended for a year-and-a-half, the judge said: “In my judgement you were spoiling for a fight. It is fortunate your anger did not cause more harm, but certainly your intention was clear as evidenced by the measures the police had to use to bring you under control.”

A THIEF who posed as a Good Samaritan then stole a gold necklace has walked from court. Teen Antonio Rhoden, who has been before the crown court five times in the past two years, was spared jail time after the judge heard he was “turning things around”. He is subject to two suspended sentences. The first, imposed in July 2019, was for his involvement in a mass brawl outside the Medina nightclub. He received the second in May this year for an attack that saw him and two others bundle a man into the back of a car and subject him to a terrifying assault.
