PROVIDENCE  A 15-year-old boy is being held at the Rhode Island Training School after being found carrying two loaded handguns this weekend, according to Providence police. Officers responded at 11:45 p.m. Friday to a report of shots being fired in the Smith Hill area near Pekin Street at Chalkstone Avenue in Providence.  Patrolman Eric Chabot spotted five young men walking on Osborn Street toward Vale Street, one of whom began shifting his body diagonally as the officer approached, Cmdr. Thomas Verdi said.

Man dies when hit by train in Providence

The Providence Journal PROVIDENCE An unidentified man died Thursday morning when he was hit by an Amtrak train near 1 Valley St. Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said the man was trespassing on railroad property at 10:13 a.m., when he came into contact with Amtrak Northeast Regional train 93 traveling between Boston and Norfolk, Virginia. Abrams said no one on the train was injured. At the time, there were 19 passengers, plus crew members. Amtrak police, Providence police and the Office of State Medical Examiners are investigating. Providence police Cmdr. Thomas Verdi said the incident does not appear suspicious. He said the police were dispatched at 10:24 a.m. to a report of someone hit by a train and found the man on Track 1 of the Amtrak main line.

Cranston man faces firearms, drug charges after traffic stop

The Providence Journal PROVIDENCE A 24-year-old Cranston man is facing drug and firearms charges after a traffic stop early Saturday on Montgomery Avenue. Jeremy Santos is charged with possession of cocaine and carrying a pistol without a license after bags of suspected cocaine and a loaded 9mm Glock handgun, with 17 rounds of ammunition, were found in his car, police Commander Thomas Verdi said. Patrolman Flavio Tavares searched the vehicle during a traffic stop at 1:39 a.m. after determining there was a Superior Court bench warrant  for Santos s arrest for failure to appear to his arraignment Jan. 25 on driving to endanger and street racing, first offense, charges, the police said. Santos was taken into custody and is expected to be held at the Adult Correctional Institutions.
