Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a bill Tuesday that would protect women who request pregnancy accommodations a measure pregnancy accommodation advocates say does not go far enough to make change.
Proponents of the bill, however, have indicated it s a good compromise between the interest of workers and businesses in Indiana.
Holcomb also made good on a promise to beef up the executive branch s own pregnancy accommodation policies, signing an executive order on Tuesday detailing what accommodations state agencies should be providing for pregnant workers, such as assistance with manual labor or more breaks.
It also prevents employers from retaliating against women and specifies that businesses still do have to follow federal laws which require them in certain circumstances to provide the same accommodations for pregnant people as they do for injuries.
This was the second legislative session Holcomb strongly advocated for a bill requiring companies to provide accommodations to pregnant workers, but only House Enrolled Act 1309 moved forward. While I have pushed for different language to become law in each of the last two sessions, I agree with members from both sides of the aisle that voted in favor of the bill as a step forward in assisting pregnant women in the workforce, Holcomb said in a statement. I’ll always be looking for ways to continue making progress on this and every other front when it comes to removing barriers to work in the workplace.”
South Bend area state lawmakers and attorneys differ on whether thatâs a good thing.
The Indiana House on Wednesday affirmed the Senateâs final version of a bill to change how the county has picked its Superior Court judges for nearly a half-century, giving the governor and county commissioners more power.
The bill next moves to Republican Gov. Eric Holcombâs desk. Its sponsor, Rep. Mike Aylesworth, R-Hebron, had told a House committee in February that Holcombâs office had asked for the changes, but the governorâs spokeswoman, Rachel Hoffmeyer, has repeatedly denied that ever happened.
âHe will review it,â Hoffmeyer told The Tribune in an email, declining to elaborate.
Update: The Senate passed its version of the $35.8 billion state budget Tuesday by a 39-10 vote, with one Democrat joining all Republicans to approve the measure.
Democrats unsuccessfully tried to amend the budget on Monday to raise the minimum wage, increase the cigarette tax, restore various line items that had been cut 15% during the pandemic, increase teacher pay and put an end to phased-in corporation tax cuts implemented under former Gov. Mike Pence, among other amendments. It s still not a budget that I can vote for, said Sen. Eddie Melton, D- Gary. There s still some things in here that doesn t address in totality what I feel that every single Hoosier want to see accomplished or needed in this session.
