Sea defences being monitored after January floods

AN UPDATED booklet has been released to give guidance to Chiswell residents in the event of another storm breaching Portland s sea defences. The Dorset Coast Forum, in partnership with the Environment Agency and Dorset Council, has released an updated version of the ‘Storms and Coastal Defences at Chiswell’ booklet after huge waves led to flooding and the closure of Portland Road in January. The booklet was produced to help inform the community on what to do in a storm event, explain how the coastal defences work and what may happen in the future. The overtopping of the sea defences and flooding in Chiswell which occurred on January 30 are to be expected when there are long period swell waves which are particularly high in energy.

Dorset s West Bay flood defence scheme worth £1 5 million is progressing well

A £1.5 MILLION scheme to protect West Bay from river flooding is progressing well despite the challenging weather and the fact it is being undertaken during a pandemic. A 380 metre sheet pile wall is being constructed alongside the River Brit as part of the scheme while the riverbank is being reprofiled. The work, which started at the end of November, is designed to protect Parkdean Resorts’ West Bay Holiday Park and the surrounding area. The embankment does not provide adequate protection so this work is being undertaken - a partnership between the Dorset Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Team (FCERM), Parkdean Resorts UK, Dorset Highways, the Environment Agency and Jacobs Consultants.
