The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners could vote next week to increase the minimum wage for county employees from $15 to $20.
Hennepin County Board Chair Marion Greene introduced the measure Tuesday, which passed unanimously out of committee. It now heads to the full board for a vote.
If passed at the Board’s Tuesday meeting, the new minimum wage would go into effect on March 28. The last minimum wage increase for county employees was five years ago.
Greene cited the impact of low wages on people of color, women and people with disabilities.

A Minneapolis man has been charged in a fatal shooting near 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in south Minneapolis, home to a memorial to George Floyd.
Shantaello Christianson, 31, was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree riot causing death and prohibited possession of a firearm, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
Christianson allegedly shot Imaz Wright of Minneapolis in a gang dispute on March 6.
According to the criminal complaint, Wright was standing outside Cup Foods at George Floyd Square when Christianson drove up in an SUV alongside his wife and wife’s cousin. Christianson and Wright, both members of the Rolling 30’s Bloods gang, were on opposite sides of a dispute.
After pandemic caused 2020 shutdown, Valleyfair plans to open in May

After COVID-19 prevented its 2020 season, Valleyfair in Shakopee is planning to open this May.
Valleyfair announced Monday that it will open to the public May 22, and its water park will open May 29, Memorial Day weekend. Season passes from 2020 will be honored this year. Unused admission tickets from 2020 can also be used through Sep. 6.
The park s new Grand Carnivale event will take place July 24-Aug. 8.
As of right now, Valleyfair says it will open at limited capacity to ensure social distancing can be maintained, and has a series of safety measures in place that may be revised up until the day before opening.
