Sprawling Oregon blaze expands, forcing firefighters, residents into retreat

BLY, Ore. (Reuters) -Stoked by hot, dry winds, the largest of several dozen Western wildfires roared through more drought-parched brush and timber in southern Oregon on Monday, displacing some 2,000 residents after destroying scores of homes, officials said.
An army of nearly 2,200 personnel battling the so-called Bootleg fire, raging in and around the Fremont-Winema National Forest 250 miles (400 km) south of Portland, increased their containment lines to 25% of its perimeter, up from 22% the day before, the Oregon Forestry Department reported. We are fighting the fire aggressively, and there are active efforts to build a containment line, both direct and indirect, wherever it is safe to do so, agency spokesman Marcus Kauffman said.

Amazon has cut off web hosting services for the NSO Group, an Israeli spyware firm that has been widely accused of aiding in the surveillance of journalists and political dissidents.

The move comes shortly after an extensive investigation into the widespread use of NSO’s commercial malware “Pegasus” a product that has the ability to totally compromise phones and is thought to be used by dozens of governments throughout the world. BLY, Ore., July 19 (Reuters) - Stoked by hot, dry winds, the largest of several dozen Western wildfires roared through more drought-parched brush and timber in southern Oregon on Monday after incinerating scores of homes, while firefighters gained additional ground against the blaze.
An army of 2,250 personnel battling the so-called Bootleg fire, raging in and around the Fremont-Winema National Forest 250 miles (400 km) south of Portland, had managed to carve containment lines around 30% of the perimeter by late Monday, up from 22% the day before, the Oregon Forestry Department reported.
