The fever struck Gary Lyon days after he and his wife, Sue, reached their Toronto home early last April, ending what was to have been their 40th wedding anniversary dream vacation.

After being rejected at several ports across South America, their ship found its final refuge in Miami, setting off a frenzied set of flights home through Columbus, Ohio and Newark, N.J.
