Landmark s demo of Pottery Town in downtown Athens brings anger, grief

Madeline Polites and Cooper Holmes perched outside the last remaining historic home on the lot on the corner of East Broad and Wilkerson Street with signs reading “Shame on Landmark Properties” and “Athens, Say No to a Parking Deck in Pottery Town.” Polites, Holmes and even Athens semi-prominent Pink Flamingo would go on to continue their protest most afternoons for several days, waving at passing cars as they honked in support. The lot is part of a larger expansion project by Landmark Properties to develop student housing and subsequent parking decks in the historic neighborhood known as Pottery Town. In the past week, homes have been demolished to prepare the property for building.

Gainesville Athletics to hold HOF induction ceremony in

GAINESVILLE  Almost a year to the day that the 2020 Gainesville Athletics Hall of Fame banquet was canceled, Gainesville Athletic Director Adam Lindsey is pleased to announce that the 2020 class will still be honored, but at a 2021 banquet. On June 8 at The Chair Factory in Gainesville, the class comprised of Billy Lothridge; Tommy Valentine; Patrick Hamilton; Stephanie (Yarem) Ransom; Dr. Tim Fulenwider; and the back-to-back-to-back state championship baseball teams from 1996, 1997, and 1998, will finally be celebrated. “We were incredibly disappointed to not be able to honor this class last year,” Lindsey said. “That disappointment, along with the caliber of former Red Elephant athletes and athletic supporters in the group, contributed greatly to the Hall of Fame committee deciding to focus solely on the Class of 2020, in 2021.”

How Athens breaker Willie Wester pioneered local hip-hop culture

The lives these individuals lived, and the stories they have to tell, aren t going to be easy to find on Google or even at the local library. Willie Wester is one of those who was there, and his personal account of how hip-hop made its way into his life, and ultimately saved it, is the stuff of great autobiographies and feature films. Born in Hempstead, N.C., in 1969, Wester s family moved to Gainesville, Ga., when he was 6 years old before settling in Athens when he was in the seventh grade. It was then, as a student at Clarke Middle School, that Wester s lifelong love of hip hop began.
