FREEPORT The Easter spirit was alive and well this past weekend during an Easter egg coloring event at the Freeport Public Library.
Conducted by staff from the Freeport Art Museum on Saturday, the coloring event gave those who attended a chance to create Easter memories and a souvenir to take home. It s not a lot of mess and fun too, said Barry Treu, director of education and exhibitions. It s all free. We re using wooden eggs so they don t break.
Once they arrived at the library, kids and adults got to pick out an egg and choose from an assortment of craft supplies and paint to decorate their eggs.

FREEPORT Often people find themselves in situations that require legal assistance, but attorney fees can be expensive and so they feel helpless to do anything.
Prairie State Legal Services aims to do something to help. For more than 40 years locally, attorneys associated with the nonprofit agency have been providing free legal help to those who qualify. We handle various legal issues but criminal defense is something we don t do, said Kira Devin, staff attorney in the Rockford office. We mostly do civil cases such as to help them not get evicted and victims of fraud and others.

FREEPORT Freeport police and community leaders agree that the level of gun violence in the city is not tolerable and they re willing to pursue all options to address it.
One of those options occurred this past weekend when residents were encouraged to bring guns of any type and size and turn them in for money Saturday at the King Community Campus. No IDs were checked or asked for, no photos taken, no questions asked; just show up with a firearm and get cash for turning it in. The goal was to try to reduce the number of violent incidents in the city in which guns are involved.
