Sparta s Helen Morgan School Plants a Heritage Oak Seedling After Reading Wishtree

May 25, 2021 at 11:25 AM SPARTA, NJ – Students at Helen Morgan School had a special event to conclude their One Book One School.  The celebration included guests, essay contest and the planting of a seedling from the Salem Oak, a 565 year old heritage tree that was uprooted and fell in June 2019. They had finished reading the “Wishtree” by Katherine Applegate and were joined by guests board of education members Kim Bragg, Jennifer Grana, Niamh Grano and Rob Zywicki, Sparta Mayor Christine Quinn, Sparta Interim Superintendent Patrick McQueeney, Freedon Superintendent Matthew Beck, Sparta Historical Society members Marjorie Strohsahl and Renee Ferguson, Helen Morgan School PTO representative Melanie Zywicki.

Wildfire rages out of control in Little Egg Harbor Township, no injuries reported Published  article LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. - A wildfire has reportedly torched several hundred acres of forest Sunday night in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey. The New Jersey Forest Service said in a Facebook post that the fire ignited in Bass River State Forest just east of the Garden State Parkway. Officials advised people to avoid the area as crews battled back the flames.  No injuries have been reported by firefighters. The fire has not yet been contained.

PHOTO COURTESY OF LISA WOLFF Local tenant farmer Tama Matsuoka Wong has partnered with the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) to sell wild cedar firestarters in order to maintain her farm assessment, when her business of supply restaurants with speciality ingredients took a hit due to COVID-19.  Prior to the pandemic, Wong farmed and foraged at the Marshall’s Corner (formerly known as Thompson) Preserve. Employing sustainable practices, Wong harvested and sold unique organic plants as specialty ingredients to high end restaurants in New York City. When the pandemic hit, Tama lost her customers overnight as restaurants shut down, according to a prepared statement.
