More movies that help us understand Texas and its history

Did you know there were two big films titled “Lone Star”? We’ve added an alphabetized list of key movies about Texas. Texans adore movies about Texas and Texans.  In my May 10 “Think, Texas” column ( Starring Texas: What you can learn about the state through its movies ), I tried to sort out what it means to be a “Texas movie,” and argued that such a film must be about our state, not just shot here. It must tell us something about who we are.  I applied that standard to 32 movies, starting with the two versions of “The Trip to Bountiful,” one starring Geraldine Page, the other Cicely Tyson, and ending with the never-ending “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” franchise.

Top 10 Hollywood Movie Actresses of All-Time – Veterans Today | Military Foreign Affairs Policy Journal for Clandestine Services

This past week we saw the 93rd Academy Awards give the Best Actress Award to Frances McDormand, again, for the 3rd time in her career. This is just one behind the record holder, Katherine Hepburn, who has 4 Oscars. But are these two the greatest of all time? Well before you read my list below, let me explain how I judged it. First, it is NOT by how many awards they won. So chill out, Kate Hepburn and Frances McDormand did NOT make my Top 10 but they did make the Top 20. If it was just Oscars, they would be 1 and 2. Instead, I judged these leading ladies by how consistently compelling they are when they appear on the silver screen. It did NOT matter how many movies they did. To me, it’s more of how they grab my attention when they act. In other words, when I see their name on the marquis do I immediately want to watch the movie just because of the top-billed actress.

Between the yearlong closure of movie theaters, the concurrent explosion in streaming content and the almost certain political influence of the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements nothing seems certain this year. Far too many of this year’s Academy Awards categories are a coin toss between who/what should win, and Oddsmakers are going crazy, and I can’t blame them.

Actors Who Gave Oscar-Winning Performances Just Before They Died

Actors Who Gave Oscar-Winning Performances Just Before They Died Actors Who Gave Oscar-Winning Performances Just Before They Died By Matthew Jackson/April 23, 2021 6:59 am EDT One of the joys of the Academy Awards is looking back on the sheer range of Oscar-winning talent in the course of the organization s nine-decade history. While there s still a long way to go in terms of diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation, the acting categories alone represent a broad selection of performers, from newcomers to veterans and everything in between. Sometimes actors land the role that will win them their Little Gold Man early; sometimes they act for years before it arrives out of nowhere. Other times, it arrives at the very end of their careers, whether they know it at the time or not.
