The four Republican candidates for attorney general broadly agree on certain policy issues â such as holding the Parole Board accountable and opposing the ending of qualified immunity for police officers.
But they tout significantly different life and work experience that they say makes them their partyâs best bet in the May 8 convention and in the November election.
The GOP candidates are Leslie Haley, a member of the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors; Del. Jason Miyares, R-Virginia Beach; Chuck Smith, a former head of the Virginia Beach GOP; and Jack White, a former clerk for Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito who is a partner at a Tysons Corner law firm.

RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Governor Ralph Northam amended legislation to accelerate the legalization of marijuana possession and home cultivation in the state to July as opposed to 2024.
“Virginia will become the 16th state to legalize marijuana - and these changes will ensure we do it with a focus on public safety, public health and social justice,” Northam stated in a release.
The governor proposed changes to House Bill 2312 and Senate Bill 1406, which passed earlier this year during the Virginia General Assembly’s special session. The bills legalized marijuana possession and sales by January 1, 2024, but marijuana legalization advocates and Democratic lawmakers lobbied to push up the date for possession.

Governor Northam Proposes Accelerating Marijuana Legalization in Virginia
RICHMOND Governor Ralph Northam today proposed moving up the legalization of simple possession of marijuana to July 1, 2021, nearly three years sooner than previously planned. The Governor also announced he is proposing changes that advance public health protections, set clear expectations for labor protections in the cannabis industry, and begin to seal criminal records immediately. The changes come in the form of amendments to Senate Bill 1406, sponsored by Senators Adam Ebbin and Louise Lucas, and House Bill 2312, sponsored by Majority Leader Charniele Herring, which legalize the adult-use of marijuana in the Commonwealth.
