UNFAIR: Council divisions cause compulsory donkey voting

(Letter to the Editor - from Bruce Devereaux, Gympie Regional Council Division 4 Councillor). I wanted to vote for a Gympie councillor I thought would do a good job, but I was not allowed to because he did not live in my division. To make things worse, voting is compulsory, so I had to vote for someone who was definitely not my first choice. Compulsory Donkey Voting - that is what this divisional voting creates. It is unfair. I can‘t say it is undemocratic, you still get to vote, but the value of your vote is diminished. The person I thought would be best as a councillor does live in the Gympie region - and I was voting for a Gympie councillor - so why can’t I vote for him? I don’t really care where my mayor or councillor lives - as long he or she is within a commutable distance to Gympie. I should be allowed to vote for who I think is best for the job.

LETTER: ScoMo s response to marching women shameful

It used to be the “Lucky Country” - the land of the “fair go”. And yesterday our Prime Minister gave himself (and the rest of us in this wonderful “Liberal Democracy”) a pat on the back for not shooting any of the thousands of women who marched peacefully against the shamefully pervasive culture of sexual and domestic violence towards women. Advance Australia Fair!

Australia Day in Gympie lifted morale and pride

Gympie Australia Day celebrations Barbara, Ayla, Madelyne, Cameron, Reece and Sabre Armstrong Business 28th Jan 2021 1:05 PM Premium Content Subscriber only Congratulations to the Gympie Regional Council on its staging ( with State Government support) of an excellent, family-oriented celebration of Australia Day at the Showgrounds on January 26. As promised, it was a festive smorgasbord of food and music ; but there was much else to be enjoyed. There was certainly a wide variety of culinary offerings ranging from the traditional Aussie fare of pies and fish and chips to exotic dishes from Spain, Brazil and Japan to name just a few of the more representative of the multicultural Australia of today.
