The government on Thursday said spending by corporates for setting up makeshift hospitals and temporary COVID-19 care facilities will be considered as CSR activities. Under the companies law, certain class of profitable entities are required to spend at least 2 per cent of their three-year annual average net profit towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Private sector urged to include CSR activities that promote unity
The private sector must include activities that promote promote national unity in their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.

“ If the corporate sector could step forward to help civil society on national unity, it would be investing directly in the nation’s stability, which was critical for business to flourish and economic activities to grow”, said deputy minister Ummy Nderiananga.
“The corporate sector has not done much, for example, to promote unity or to help civil society groups to play their role in fostering national unity,”she explained.
