An upcoming hula exhibit at the new expansive art spaces at the Downtown Art Center in Chinatown comes on the heels of the Merrie Monarch Festival. Opening on Aug. 3, the exhibit is called Ho’okupu To Emerge: The Love of Hula.
It will feature about a dozen artists who have focused their talent around the culture of hula, including unseen images from the John Kelly and Kate Kelly Collection. Some liken it to “a show within a show.”
The Conversation talked to Cha Smith, the archivist for the Kelly Collection, the centerpiece for the upcoming art exhibit. The exhibit closes on Aug. 28.
