BROOKHAVEN, GA A transgender woman was found shot and killed in the doorway of her Brookhaven apartment last week, and police say they do not have evidence at this point that she was killed based on her gender.
Around 8:15 a.m. May 4, Brookhaven Police Department officers responded to a report of a person shot at the Atlantic Brookhaven Apartments complex, according to a May 12 news release from BPD.

Sophie Vásquez, a 36-year-old Latina transgender woman, was fatally shot in her Brookhaven, Atlanta apartment last week.
Police found her body neglected in the doorway of an apartment in the 400 building at Atlantic Brookhaven. Vásquez was not a recorded resident, according to Project Q.
Brookhaven Police Department later confirmed Vásquez was murdered in Gwinnett County in the early morning.
The 36-year-old was misgendered and deadnamed in the police report for the case.
“Through communications with the Community Estrella and the Brookhaven Police Department, I confirmed reports that a Latina transgender woman, Sophie Vasquez, was murdered in Gwinnett County on the morning of May 4,” Darlene Darlington Wagner, the President at Transgender Day of Remembrance Atlanta shared on Facebook.

Two transgender women in separate states were shot and killed inside their homes on May 4th, as the nation’s violence against trans folks continued at a record pace for the year.
El Nuevo Georgia reported Sophie Vásquez, 36, a Latinx transgender woman, was shot and killed in her apartment in Brookhaven, Georgia, while
WMAR reported Danny Henson, 31, a Black transgender woman, was shot and killed inside her home in Baltimore, Maryland. Like many other transgender victims of violence, Vásquez was misgendered and deadnamed in police reports, while Henson was also misgendered by a friend in the press.
