A year after daughter’s death in North Carolina, grieving mom still waiting for answers; ‘It’s devastating’
CHICAGO (WBBM) A grieving Plainfield mom reached out to CBS 2 a year after her daughter unexpectedly passed away in North Carolina.
Debbie Heater has subpoenaed documents, and called local law enforcement in North Carolina, but still can’t get clear answers about how her daughter’s death is being investigated.
CBS 2’s Tim McNicholas looked into her lingering questions.
Shortly after Courtney Heater’s boyfriend made a frantic 911 call, an ambulance rushed to a rural North Carolina home. EMTs pronounced her dead at 4 a.m. on Feb 2, 2020.

UPDATE: The Columbus County Sheriffâs Office has arrested the suspect.
COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - The Columbus County Sheriffâs Office is asking for the publicâs help to locate a man accused of repeatedly raping an 11-year-old girl.
According to a news release, deputies responded to Columbus Regional Medical Center in July 2020 after the victim reported that she had been raped multiple times, and on multiple different occasions, by James Patrick McCormick.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Two of the three dogs that were stolen from the Columbus County Animal Shelter during a recent break-in have been returned to their owner, according to officials.
The two dogs, Bella and Bentley, both white poodles, belong to Loretta Shipman, the shelter’s director. She dropped the dogs off at the shelter for a foster parent to pick them up to look after them while she recovered from surgery, according to a shelter spokesperson.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - The Columbus County Sheriffâs Office is investigating after a man was shot in the head during an attempted robbery last week.
According to a news release, deputies responded around 10 p.m. on Jan. 22 to a home in the 10600 block of Swamp Fox Highway East near Tabor City after receiving a 911 call, requesting emergency personnel.
âDeputies arrived on scene and were unable to get an answer at the front door. Deputies then walked to the rear of the residence and observed blood evidence on the rear door steps and an unsecured door. Deputies made entry to secure the residence and located additional blood evidence inside of the residence,â the news release stated.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Columbus County detectives are asking for the publicâs help to identify a man caught on camera breaking into a pair of Dollar Generals and stealing cartons of cigarettes.
According to a news release, deputies responded to the Dollar General in the Old Dock Community shortly after 2 a.m. on Jan. 8 and found the storeâs front glass door had been busted in.
