At Mehlenbacher s arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Alex Willett said the defendant was staying at a friend s apartment when he became angered with Confer and others who were making noise in a nearby apartment.
Willett said Mehlenbacher first got into a verbal argument with the victim and neighbors and was brandishing a handgun during the argument.
After his friend initially convinced him to come back inside and shut the door, Mehlenbacher later opened the door and shot Confer in the head, Willett said. He then allegedly collected his belongings and fled.
His car was spotted about two hours later in the Riverside County city of Murrieta by Border Patrol officers, the prosecutor said. Officers gave chase because the car was driving erratically on surface streets and later ended the pursuit for safety reasons, though the prosecutor said that at the time, the officers were unaware the defendant was wanted for murder.

Four days after a man was fatally shot in San Diego, authorities found and arrested the 18-year-old suspect in Murrieta, police said Thursday.
San Diego police had been looking for Joseph Mehlenbacher, wanted as the suspected gunman in the death of 28-year-old San Diego resident Kenneth Confer earlier this week.
San Diego police homicide Lt. Andra Brown said Mehlenbacher was found in the Southwest Riverside County city and arrested without incident Wednesday. She did not say what led authorities to find Mehlenbacher, but thanked Murrieta Police Department for their help in apprehending him.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) A suspect was arrested in connection with a shooting that killed one man in the El Cerrito neighborhood late Saturday night, San Diego Police announced.
Joseph Mehlenbacher,18, was booked into the San Diego County Jail on Wednesday for murder in the death of 28-year-old Kenneth Confer four days earlier, according to police.
Shortly after 11 p.m. on December 26, Police were called to the 5700 block of El Cajon Boulevard after receiving reports of a possible shooting in the area. When they arrived, officers found Confer with an apparent gunshot to the head. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died, according to police.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today identified a 28-year-old man who was shot in the head in the El Cerrito neighborhood of San Diego on Christmas weekend, as the hunt for his killer continued.
At 11:03 p.m. Saturday, San Diego police dispatchers received a 911 call regarding a possible shooting outside of a residence in the 5700 block of El Cajon Boulevard. Patrol officers arrived to find the wounded victim, later identified as Kenneth Confer of San Diego, on a second-floor landing with a head wound, according to SDPD Lt. Matt Dobbs.
