SANTA FE – Senate Bill 140 sailed unanimously without debate through the House this afternoon. Senator Gay Kernan and Representative Daymon Ely introduced joint legislation that modernizes New Mexico child support law and brings it in compliance with federal law that will collect more child support for New Mexico kids. Passage of the bill saves New Mexico from losing $147.5 million in federal funding: $122.6 million for the Temporary Assistance for Low-Income Families (TANF) program and $24.9 million in child support administrative/program funding if it fails to comply with federal law.
Senate Bill 140 sponsored by Sen. Gay Kernan and the duplicate House Bill 190 sponsored by Rep. Daymon Ely comprehensively modernizes several child support provisions to align with federal regulations and national best practices.
The 60-day legislative session heads to an end at midnight, and lawmakers are putting the final touches on their scheduled work for the year. While most of Republican leadership s priorities have been settled, hundreds of bills still have a chance of making it across the finishline before the Senate and House of Delegates gavel out sine die.

David B. Bennett was recently sworn into office for a second term as judge of the Probate and Juvenile divisions of the Guernsey County Common Pleas Court.
“I have enjoyed the last six-years serving the residents of Guernsey County protecting the most vulnerable members of our community, as well as providing equal justice to all litigants before the court,” said Bennett.
