The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office says a cigarette is to blame for a fire that claimed the lives of two Peterborough residents over the weekend.
Officials say the blaze originated from the porch area outside of the home and spread from there.
A 69-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man died in the fire in Gillespie Avenue, while the Fire Marshal’s office says all smoke alarms in the home were working.
A spokesperson from the Fire Marshal’s office says this fire serves as a reminder to make sure cigarette are fully put out in a non-combustible container after use.
