With Thursday’s opening of Independence Pass and Friday’s closing of I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, local law enforcement and transportation officials were on guard for semi-trucks trying to sneak over the Pass.
As the summer camping season begins in earnest this Memorial Day Weekend, officials are urging people to be careful with fire and respectful of the backcountry.

The Cameron Peak Fire burned through the headwaters for northern Colorado s Poudre River and many of its small tributaries.
Record-breaking wildfires in 2020 turned huge swaths of Western forests into barren burn scars. Those forests store winter snowpack that millions of people rely on for drinking and irrigation water. But with such large and wide-reaching fires, the science on the short-term and long-term effects to the region’s water supplies isn’t well understood.
To understand, and possibly predict what happens after a river’s headwaters goes up in flames, researchers are descending on newly created burn scars across the West to gather data in the hopes of lessening some of the impacts on drinking water systems.
Ava Bowles said she left Rifle for an appointment at Canyon Creek about 1:30 p.m. last Friday, unaware of the major traffic backup that awaited her, caused by a serious-injury wreck near New Castle.
Watering restrictions are in place for Glenwood Springs residents, according to a news release.
Odd numbered home addresses can water on odd days of the month and even numbered home addresses can water on even days of the month.
Watering on both odd and even numbered days is prohibited from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“Most irrigation controls have this as a built-in setting option,” the release states.
“The city is requesting that residents do not water lawns for a longer duration of time than normal. Items to consider are shorter showers, less or no bathtub filling, no filling of pools, dishwashers set on the water saving mode, less frequent washing machine loads, minimum car washing, etc.”
