ELIZABETHTON â The Carter County School System is preparing for a new school year, with a lot of thought being given to health and hygiene as well as academics.
The first day of school is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 4. The session will start with masks being optional. School administrators will continue to monitor health conditions and may modify the current plans. At this time, the administrators said they will not require students or staff to wear a mask in the classroom or on the bus. Students and staff may wear a mask if they so desire, but it will not be a requirement.
ELIZABETHTON â In a special called meeting on Monday evening, the Carter County Commission soundly voted down a bid of $3,428,687.40 for a new countywide communications system that would have provided up-to-date radio communication for 10 agencies, including law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire departments.
The motion was to vote down the $3.5 million bid and to start over with a new request for proposals for a countywide communications system.
According to the Carter County Clerkâs Office, the vote to reject the bid was 19-2, with three absences. Isaiah Grindstaff and Thomas Proffitt were the only ânoâ votes. Mike Hill, Randall Jenkins and Gary Bailey were absent.

ELIZABETHTON â Although a former employee of the Carter County School System was indicted last week on one count of theft over $2,500, the problems reported by the state comptroller of the Treasury has already been corrected, according to Director of Schools Tracy McAbee.
The investigation was limited to selected records for the period from July 1, 2017 through January 31, 2020. That was prior to the time when McAbee assumed the role of director of schools. He said it was also prior to the appointment of LeeAnn Carr as the new director of the Head Start program in Carter County.
The results of the comptrollerâs investigation was released on Monday. It reported that Joyce Parsons, a former administrative assistant of the Head Start program had misappropriated funds totaling $8,657. She is accused of using Head Start purchases to make at least $8,657 in unauthorized personal purchases that included clothing, groceries, cosmetics, household goods, and personal hygiene produc
