The 93rd Academy Awards are here! We’ll be updating over the course of the evening as the winners are announced and a full list will be available as soon as the ceremony comes to an end.

The ceremony kicked off with Regina King walking into a small auditorium with a select audience of presenters and nominees. She pointed out that no one was wearing a mask, explaining that they were able to do it the same way it’s done on a film set, by following the same strict COVID-19 protocols and by wearing masks when the cameras were not rolling.
Nomadland led the winners of the 93rd Academy Awards
this Sunday with the film picking up the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (Chloe Zhao) and Best Actress (Frances McDormand).
Zhao – who next directs Marvel’s cosmic superhero adventure
Eternals – became the first woman of colour to receive the Oscar for Best Director, and only the second woman ever to be honoured in the category after The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow. McDormand meanwhile takes her Best Actress tally to three wins from three nominations (second only to Katharine Hepburn on four wins from 12 nominations).

After years of criticism for a lack of diversity, this year s slate of nominees contained some notable firsts. It was the first time an all-Black producing team was nominated for best picture, the first time two actors of Asian descent received a nod for best actor and the first year that two women were nominated for best director. When the winners were revealed, it reflected this spirit of inclusion.
Chloe Zhao took home the best directing trophy, becoming the second woman to claim the title. Her film, Nomadland, also snagged the top prize of the night, best picture.
However, in a strange balk of tradition, the award was not presented last. Instead it was handed out before the best actress and best actor awards. It is unclear why the Academy made this change.
