PITTSFIELD â The City Council Tuesday accepted the budgets for the fire department and emergency management, then debated the Pittsfield Police Department funding request following calls during the public comment portion of the meeting to probe and reduce areas of police spending. Councilors had not conducted a final vote on the police budget by press time, after power outages kicked some councilors off of the Zoom meeting and prompted the council to break for two recesses. By unanimous vote, the council signed off Mayor Linda Tyerâs proposed $8,781,434 million budget for the fire department for next fiscal year, up 4.2 percent over this fiscal year, and her $26,400 level-funded request for emergency management. The council accepted the budgets without much discussion, but with praise for Fire Chief Thomas Sammons and his department.

Pittsfield City Council backs $67 3 million school budget

PITTSFIELD â A $67.3 million school spending plan received preliminary approval from the City Council on Monday, when councilors zeroed in on concerns about teacher and student retention. The Pittsfield Public Schools budget for next fiscal year represents a 4.4 percent increase over the two most recent fiscal years. Last year, the city adopted a level-funded budget amid concerns that the coronavirus pandemic would send state education funding cratering. Among the expenses included in the budget are an estimated $1.6 million for contractual obligations, though interim Superintendent Joseph Curtis said negotiations with the districtâs employee unions over new contracts are ongoing. It also includes money for a new Information and Support Services and Networking program and the restoration of four elementary literacy positions the district says were cut from this yearâs budget.
