Bangkok (VNA) - The
Thailand is doing
everything possible to bring home five
Vietnamese fishermen found adrift at sea
and rescued by Thai seafarers after their ship sank off Vietnam’s coast last
week.
They were aboard a squid fishing vessel that set out from An Thoi Port
in Kien Giang province’s Phu Quoc Island. The boat was at anchor in waters adjacent
to Thailand and Cambodia early May 7 when its gas tank became leaky and exploded,
causing the boat to sink.
The fishermen, having survived the explosion, were adrift until they
were rescued by Thai fishermen at around 2pm on the same day. They were later

The Japanese Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City on May 10 announced the Japanese Government’s decision to bestow the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon upon Vietnamese Professor Vo Tong Xuan.

Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Motegi Toshimitsu has also sent his congratulatory letter to the professor.
Xuan is an agricultural scientist with many of his research conducted in the Mekong Delta – Vietnam’s rice granary. He conducted a research focusing in rice cultivation techniques in the tropics in 1974 while he was studying at Kyushu University in Japan. After completing his doctoral degree in agronomy, he returned home and worked at Can Tho University. In collaboration with Japanese researchers, Xuan continued to carry out studies on rice cultivation techniques.

The virtual program will feature remembrances of Irene’s impact on and contributions to society through the countless lives she touched and the many causes she championed.
At the time of her passing one year ago, Irene was the president of the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC). She established USJC in 2009 with her late husband, U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, and other prominent Japanese Americans to connect leaders and strengthen ties between the two countries. Irene Hirano Inouye dedicated her life to major philanthropic and social causes in America, but perhaps her greatest legacy is her role in strengthening the U.S.-Japan relationship, including support for Tohoku’s recovery and an initiative created to benefit young people in the aftermath of the earthquake.

A sansei, she served as the founding CEO and president of the Japanese American National Museum for 20 years. Her own family’s history in America was shaped by the country’s wartime internment of Japanese Americans, including her paternal grandfather and her aunts and uncles. In 2009, she became the founding president of the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC), which was established with her late husband, U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, and other prominent Japanese Americans to develop and connect diverse leaders in Japan and the United States.

CSSW connection:Jeanette Takamura served as the School of Social Work’s dean, the first woman to do so, from 2002 to 2016. She is now a professor at the School in addition to being dean emerita, teaching courses on federal policy.
Path to political involvement: Though she began her career as a practicing social worker serving youth and families, Jeanette Takamura was soon called to serve in government first at the state, and then at the national, level with the goal of advancing policies and programs in aging, health, and related areas. In her native Hawaii, she became involved in Hawaii state government, serving as the chief operating officer of the Hawaii State Department of Health and then as the Director of the Executive Office on Aging within the State of Hawaii’s Office of the Governor, covering aging, health, and long-term care programs for the state.
