New York s Big 5 urban school districts saw improved graduation rates in 2020, with Yonkers again leading the way. The Yonkers school district surpassed the state graduation rate and became the first of the Big 5 to reach a rate over 90%. Its 90.6% rate was 2.6 percentage points higher than in 2019.
The New York City schools, the state s largest system with over 1.1 million students, achieved a graduation rate of 78.8%, up from 77.3%.
Buffalo s rate jumped to 76.3% from 64.7% a year earlier. Rochester achieved a rate of 68.2%, up from 63% the year before. Syracuse schools went from 64.5% to 70.7%.
Rosa cited Yonkers strong My Brother s Keeper mentoring program and said the state has talked to Yonkers officials about their work with students with disabilities and English language learners. But she said additional conversation is in order.
