Dr. Khalid Al-Sultan is the newly appointed chairman of the board of directors of the Saudi Electricity Company, a position he has held in an acting capacity since 2018.
A long-time academic, he began his career as an assistant professor at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in 1990, rising through the university’s academic ranks before becoming rector in 2003. Notably, he is the first rector to have graduated from the institution to hold this position. He also has served as deputy minister for educational affairs.
He served as dean of the College of Computer Sciences and Engineering from September 1996 until August 1998 and chairman of the Department of Systems Engineering from June 1993 until August 1996 at KFUPM.

Metagenomics - the study of genetic material from an environmental sample - is growing as species evolve or are discovered across the globe. To correlate the newly developed microbiomes with existing data sets, a team of researchers based in China has developed the Microbiome Search Engine 2 (MSE 2). It was published on Jan. 19 in
mSystems, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. Mohammed bin Ali Al-Hayaza was recently appointed a board member of the Education and Training Evaluation Commission.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from KSU. He did his master’s and Ph.D. in chemistry from Boston University in 1988 and 1992 respectively.
Al-Hayaza has been the president of Alfaisal University since March 1, 2015. He also served as a member of the Shoura Council for nearly 20 month starting in 2015. He served as the health minister from December 2014 to January 2015.
Prior to joining Alfaisal, Al-Hayaza served as the president of Jazan University from 2007 to 2014.
He served as the vice president for postgraduate studies and research at King Khalid University (KKU) from August 2002 to Nov. 23, 2007. From April 2003 to November 2007, he worked as a professor at the KKU’s chemistry department.
