DocLands showcases documentary film in a variety of genres and with a diversity of content, while exploring three main programming strands and highlighting films that transcend the traditional definition of the documentary films that break form in terms of creativity and entertainment.
WonderLands will lift our spirits through stories of joy, wonder and possibility.
The Great Outdoors will transport us outside to truly appreciate, explore and ultimately compel us to save and conserve our environment and the wilds of our one precious and precarious planet.
Art of Impact will engage and spark action by sharing stories that open our eyes to the global community and its disparate cultures, politics, personal narratives and biographies.
Sometimes the most stimulating films accomplish something seemingly simple yet startlingly complex they just tell the truth. This year’s lineup at the 2021 DocLands Documentary Film Festival is a testament to truth-telling with an illuminating slate of 42 nonfiction films. The program, presented by the California Film Institute, runs from Friday to May 16.

On a recent sunny Sunday afternoon, the sounds of live jazz wafted up and down Balboa Street in the Outer Richmond District as a small crowd sipped beer, munched on popcorn and moved with the rhythm.
During the final set from Danny Brown and the Noise All-Stars in front of the closed entrance to the Balboa Theater, Emily Bridwell and her two young children arrived. As the musicians packed up their instruments, workers wheeled a big-screen TV out to the theater’s parklet, where Bridwell’s children plopped down to watch a free showing of “Toy Story 2.”
