Nina Rodgers of the Minnesota Whitecaps is playing some of the best hockey of her life in Lake Placid. After four games, she leads her team and the league in scoring with six points in four games.
This is Rodgers’ third NWHL season after splitting her collegiate hockey career between the University of Minnesota and Boston University, and starting her professional career with the Connecticut Whale. She was expected to play a bigger role in the Whitecaps’ offense this year, but no one expected her to come out of the gate quite like this.

The Minnesota Whitecaps game against the Connecticut Whale and one other NWHL game on Thursday night the Buffalo Beauts vs. the Toronto Six were postponed out of an abundance of caution when the Metropolitan Riveters were forced to withdraw from the 2021 NWHL season after several members of the organization tested positive for COVID-19.
The decision to withdraw the Riveters (2-1) from competition follows the NWHL s medical protocols established for this season.
The season will proceed with five teams, an NWHL statement said, and the league will continue to strictly adhere to the medical protocols to protect everyone s safety.

The National Women’s Hockey League announced Thursday, Jan. 28 that the Metropolitan Riveters, one of six teams playing a scheduled two-week season at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, has withdrawn. And just like so many instances across the world of sports during the past several months, the coronavirus was the culprit. The league put a news release on its website that said, “The Metropolitan Riveters have withdrawn from the 2021 NWHL season after several members of the organization tested positive for COVID-19.”
